The Art of Beetle Wing Embroidery
Online Workshop with Live Teacher

Beetle wing embroidery, made with glittering gold work embellished with the wing casings of the Jewel Beetle, was popular through most of the 19th century and into the 1920s. This online workshop with a live teacher will use couched cording techniques to make two simple motifs and learn to shape and apply the wings.
Students will receive a pdf handout and embroidery kit for class.
The embroidery kit includes:

Cotton fabric with designs pre-marked

Gold cord

Beetle wings

Thread
-
Needles
Students are expected to provide:

Basic handsewing kit (thread snips, wax, thimble)

6-10" Embroidery hoop

Nail clippers &/or craft scissors for cutting wings

Optional: needle threader

Optional: double boiler, rice cooker or Instant Pot w/steamer insert

Catherine served on the board of the Greater Bay Area Costumers Guild for 10 years as Newsletter Editor, Events Coordinator, and President. She has taught many costuming workshops for GBACG, Lacis, Renaissance Fabrics, and Costume College, and is a current fashion student.
