A Measured Approach
Drafting an 1880s Bodice Pattern using Period Methods

Online Workshop with Live Teacher

May 17-18, 2025

Instructor
Catherine Scholar

Join us for another workshop in the Precision series, master classes that focus on the technical creation of custom elements for tailored results.

In this two-day seminar, students will use a half-scale dress form to draft a Victorian bodice pattern using original period methods from an 1886 dressmaking manual. Attendees will create a sample paper pattern (including basque adjustment and a two-piece sleeve) and complete the class with the knowledge and ability to draft a full-sized pattern on their own.

Instruction given covers:

  • Taking accurate measurements

  • Drafting

  • Creating the paper pattern

  • Fitting a mockup

  • Pattern adjustments

  • Using the basic draft to recreate other styles

Class includes pdf handout, supply list, half-scale accessory epatterns (bustle pad, half-scale arm) and bonus material.

Students will create the dress forms prior to class, using the Victorian half-scale dress form epattern ($8 US)

from Ninonella**-

Victorian Half-Scale EPattern

Students who have previously made this same Ninonella half-scale form for class may use theirs, a new one is not required. Students must use this pattern for class, rather than a modern half-scale form.

**Costume On has no affiliation with Ninonella. The pattern is ideal for a half-scale 1880s period silhouette, with clear instructions and a how-to Youtube video**
