Join instructor Chantal Filson for an online workshop that walks you through the process every step of the way on-camera with a live teacher.
Students will complete numerous sewing samples in class under teacher supervision (both hand and machine-sewn) to learn:
-various machine stitches
-various hand stitches
-types of seams
-3 types of hems
-shirt cuff
-waistband
-darts
-2 types of pleats
-gathering
-creating a shaped edge with a facing
-how to make and use bias edging
-how to make and use piping
-tips & tricks
The instructor will explain and demonstrate:
-various brands of sewing machines & how to use
-types of sewing machine feet & how to use
-various types of thread, needles & sewing tools
-identifying & working with various fabrics
-tips & techniques for ironing
-types of glues, boning and interfacing
-flatlining and bag lining
-appliques and working with trim and elastic
-draping vs drafting
-choosing & using patterns (paper & digital)
-mockups, fitting & alterations
-tips for velvet, knits, fur, leather, vinyl & embroidery
-brief overview of specialties (corsetry, historical costuming, costuming for film/performance, couture, millinery)
Reference examples provided will include antique garments, clothing items and photos of projects from the instructor's 25 year career in film & television.
Supply list and pdf handout with links/info will be provided in advance, teacher will demonstrate techniques on camera and assist students as they work along at home. Master Class tuition includes Student Orientation and follow-up assistance as needed.
**Sewing machine is highly recommended but not mandatory for class. If you would like to purchase one to use in class, please contact me for a consult in advance**
The course is geared towards beginners, but all levels of experience are welcome. Costume On is body-positive, beginner-friendly and a staunch supporter of inclusivity/bipoc/lgbtq/costuming for any gender.

Chantal is a chihuahua parent, professional costume designer and the Founder/Dean of Costume On.
As a professional costume designer/seamstress/milliner she has designed and constructed clothing and costumes for every type of media and project, from space suits for film to 19th century replicas for a museum. She has taught for Costume College, Costume On, Costumers Guild West, Grant Larson Productions, Genesee Country Village & Museum and others.
Her first garment was a pair of shorts made out of a towel, and they were absolutely terrible.
